Fondazione Barilla was established in 2009 as a think tank dedicated to studying the relationship between food, health, and the planet. From the very beginning, its work has been characterized by a rigorously multidisciplinary approach, aimed at tackling one of the most complex challenges of our time: understanding how our food choices simultaneously affect individual health and well-being, as well as the health of the planet.
Through years of research, Fondazione Barilla has explored how nutrition is a key factor in human health, analyzed the profound impact that food systems have on the environment and natural resources, and identified concrete strategies through which more sustainable approaches can reverse this trend and build resilient food systems for the future. This work has shown how clear and engaging scientific information can unlock the extraordinary opportunities that conscious food choices bring to everyday life.
Today, Fondazione Barilla leverages this knowledge to generate tangible impact. It does so through educational publications, awareness campaigns, and training projects designed to foster widespread public awareness and translate that awareness into everyday action.
Fondazione Barilla does not merely conduct research; it works to build bridges between the scientific world and daily life, making evidence accessible and actionable that would otherwise remain confined to academia.
Its most recent projects, “Food Facts” and “The Savings Book”, embody this philosophy: they stem from the ambition to distill scientific research across multiple disciplines into practical, immediately applicable advice.

FOOD
SUISTAINABILITY INDEX
The Food Sustainability Index is a project carried out in conjunction with Economist Impact, analyzing the food systems of 78 countries using 38 indicators and 95 subindicators grouped around three fundamental pillars: food losses and waste, sustainable agriculture, and nutritional challenges.
By means of a constant review process, environmental, economic and social indicators were selected to establish a comparable qualitative and quantitative standard for all the countries covered by the study. In 2021, the Barilla Foundation and Economist Impact created a spin-off, focused on the G20 countries.

PUBLICATIONS
Since 2009, Fondazione Barilla has been studying the relationship between food, people, and the planet. Today, this research is transformed into practical tools for citizens: clear information and knowledge to support conscious food choices.
